General notes

  • Name resolution follows /etc/nsswitch.conf
  • Hostname resolution follows /etc/hosts, followed by dns, which usually looks at /etc/resolv.conf
  • Operating systems and browsers usually have their own cache
  • There’s ISP DNS, global DNS, etc
  • DNS records are stored in zone viles on authoritative DNS servers, such as A/AAAA/CNAME/MX/NS, each with different purposes
  • /etc/nsswitch.conf tells you to use 'file' or 'dns'
    • 'file' refers to /etc/hosts
